Water Ice Jello Shot

As someone who did not grow up in Philly, and had therefor never heard of "Water Ice", my head exploded with WTFs several times my first summer here. That name is asinine!

You must understand I eventually got over myself, and I'm now a full fledged Water Ice eater. I get cravings for it! I've been wanting to make a Water Ice jello shot for some time, and since this is my last summer in Philly, I knew I had to get it done TODAY.

So I went to Rita's and picked up a Cherry "Gelati", and a Blue Raspberry Water Ice. I wish I had picked up lemon (my favorite) because I think that's an old timey classic- but I chose the ones I did based on color.

I topped them with cool whip -scooped with a mini ice cream scooper- because the custard on the gelati did not make it home ;)

CHERRY WATER ICE JELLO SHOT

Add 1 table spoon of granulated gelatin to 1/2 cup of melted (but not warm) water ice.

After granules are saturated, warm this mixture in the microwave or a sauce pan- and stir until granules are dissolved.

Add 1/2 cup of cherry vodka, stir, and pour into small cups.

Allow to set in the refrigerator.

Tape decorative paper to cups, and top with Cool Whip.

To be honest, the blue raspberry was nasty.

Blue Sky (Breaking Bad) Jello Shots

We whipped up some Breaking Bad jello shots to look like Heisenberg's famous Blue Sky!
We packed them in small baggies...these bags don't seal shut, but in our research we learned you can get legit tiny bags from bead shops. Good to know, huh!

For the jello shots you see pictured,  we used:
lemon flavored water, blueberry vodka, sugar, blue food coloring and gelatin.
You could absolutely use store bought blue Jell-o and any flavored vodka or rum.

Tiffany's Boxes

We've had a lot of heart shaped Valentine's day shots over the last couple of years, but this year we have something even more creative- A SQUARE! Though I'm pro-valentines day, and any occasion that promotes the color combination of pink and red, this jello shot represents the gross ($$$) side the holiday that we can't really relate to. You see, we're being, like, ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife!

This shot is one of our standard flavored-vodka-and-sweetened-condensed-milk recipes*. This is with grape vodka, for no particular reason. The boxes are made with two different pieces, the lids are a little less thick than the bases. The bows are drawn on with white gel food coloring as neat as I can possibly manage (so, not very). The rings are a choking hazard, so make sure you serve these early in the night!

*Super easy: dissolve an envelope of gelatin in 1/4 cup of water, add a 1/4 cup of SCM, any food coloring, and a 1/2 cup of vodka. Do a test run to make sure they come out to YOUR PARTICULAR TASTE (see "this is how we do it" on the right column.

small rings $.80 a dozen.

Samoas (Caramel Delights)

A few years ago, I bough a box of Samoas from some kids at the 8th street el station, here in Philadelphia. Now, I've made a few purchases on the El (what up egyptian musk and Meet the Parents bootleg) so I was not at all surprised when I got home and noticed that I had not bought a familiar box of Samoas, but I had bought "Caramel Delights". Had I been hustled by Girl Scout impostors?

Turns out they were legit- but I did spend the next week telling anyone who would listen (captive audiences) about how "Can You Believe They Changed The Name of Samoas to Caramel Delights Because There Was Outrage Over The Name Samoa Being Culturally Insensitive".  I totally fabricated the cultural insensitivity thing, but you try making a story about buying girl scout cookies interesting.

I'd be remiss not to mention that Vicky B. has a Samoa recipe in her book, but the one we made up on the fly is super different and not at all a copy.  For this one we used: caramel syrup, coconut cream, chocolate sauce, toasted coconut, chocolate chips and of course, rum and gelatin.

really glad the shredded paper is in focus.

White Chocolate Spodee

White Chocolate Spodee
VIDEO INSTRUCTIONS!

Our Chocolate Covered Spodee's was such a hit, that when the cool people at Spodee asked us to come up with something for one of their videos, the choice was obvious. Whenever we do a video, we like to highlight a technique that is too complex to describe on paper. Ever wondered how to make a chocolate covered jello shot? Check the video ABOVE!

Woodruff & Lavenderliner

Woodruff and Lavenderliner
Berliner Weisse
Granulated gelatin
Woodruff syrup
Lavender syrup

authentisch.

Created for Philly Beer Week, the base of this jello shot is Nodding Head Brewery's Ich Bin Ein Beliner Weisse,  a very tart variety of wheat beer, in which syrup (woodruff or raspberry) is traditionally added.

Woodruff syrup (Waldmeistersirup) in an herbal additive with vanilla, marshmellowey flavor. From what my google skills are telling me, it's unheard of to drink a berliner weisse in Berlin without syrup added.

The bottom layer of the jello shot is berliner and lavender: berliner weisse has a distinct sour taste, and balancing out citrus is one of lavender's second best talent (first is fancying up bougie cupcakes).

Banh Mi Jello Shot

Banh Mi
granulate gelatin
jalapeno infused rum
limeade
agave
coconut milk
cilantro

Nobody loves a Vietnamese hoagie more than Mi. The thing I was most excited about to South Philly from Fishtown was the availability of Banh Mi sandwiches. These jello shots are inspired by the spicy, cilantro sandwiches (warm baguettes eaten separately).

We infused white rum with fresh jalapenos, which are so potent we only steeped it for about an hour. We actually used a little extra agave in the lime cilantro lime layer (the top of the domes) to curb the 'heat' of the rum.  The coconut cream is very sweet out of the bottle, so it mixed well with the savory liquor.

The jello shots are placed on sesame crackers, from Kung Fu Hoagies, a new (vegan) banh mi food cart that I'm thrilled comes to Passyunk Ave sometimes.

veB1DW on Make A Gif, Animated Gifs

It's hot as hell in Philadelphia (if hell is about 85 degrees) and what's better than an orange creamsicle from the ice cream truck on a hot day? If you don't feel like waiting 'til the truck makes it's rounds at, like, 11 pm, have I got a jello shot for you!

Chocolate Covered Spodee

Chocolate Covered Spodee

Dark Chocolate, Paramount Crystals
Spodee
Cherry wishniak soda
Granulated gelatin

Last week we made Jello shots for the launch of Spodee, a depression era spirit. It's a spiced and sweetened wine, fortified with moonshine, and it is delightful. I'm completely done with putting chocolate bitters in Sandeman's Reserve- Spodee is more affordable and delicious.

We had a blast at the launch party, which was in a warehouse with INDOOR food trucks, an ice cream tricycle and a plaid clad blue grass band. Hand-to-god we were in Fishtown, not Brooklyn. Chrissy, Moe's sister took a lot of great pictures but unfortunately I'm in most of them :(

12$ Shirts

We made these shirts a while ago because merchandising is the most important part of any project.

Here's a little background info from a conversation with Drew Lazor of the City Paper:

About three weeks back we received an mysterious package at Meal Ticket HQ containing a T-shirt emblazoned with cryptic Toynbee tile-inspired phraseology about ... gelatin. We were a bit flummoxed at first but then realized there really could be only one origin for such an on-message piece of apparel. Yes, this is the handiwork of Moe Sheehan and Cory Kete, the twosome behind the amazing My Jello Americans Jell-O Shot blog. CP profiled them in 2010.
Last March, "Cory made a Toynbee tile out of gelatin and put it on the the street [in Fishtown]," explains Sheehan, who currently lives in Austin. "It's fun to use some local lore in the shots." Like real ephemeral Toynbee tiles, the gelatin version was stepped on and ground up by Oxford Street pedestrians, but the duo's immortalized the idea via these tees. Sheehan and Kete don't have plans to retail the shirts, screen-printed by Awesome Dudes. But there's a chance you'll see some local MJA action out on the town this summer, when Sheehan returns from Texas to visit Philly and help out her cousin, "Honest" Tom McCusker, with his taco truck."

The Transubstantiation

Growing up in my family of 6 kids we liked to play a lot of make believe. The best was pretending to be an authority figure of some sort. A parent, a teacher, a cop or robber, and of course, as we went to mass every Sunday and had a healthy fear of the lord, a priest. One day in the living room my sisters and I used potato chips and pretended to be priests and churchgoers.

(Perfectly normal, right?)

Well, my mom yelled at us.

Apparently we were making a mockery of something really special. I thought we were being good Catholics. The shock that we were doing something wrong was immense. So much so that I still remember it 25 years later. The desire to pretend to be a priest may have waned as I grew older, but the guilt grew stronger, affecting every aspect of my life.

For example, for years now I have worked every Easter Brunch as a dutiful employee of various restaurants. Today I am only modestly employed and don’t work. Because of this modest employment, I also can’t travel to be with my family. The guilt is great. I wasn't able to get out of bed today. That is, until this great idea came to be. How better to assuage this Catholic guilt than with a Jello shot that would disappoint my family?

I present, the Transubtantiation. It’s just water and gelatin, but with a little faith, our favorite party god can turn it into wine. Let us pray.

The Transubstantiation:

cream easter eggs

Cream Easter Eggs
Just experimenting with the chocolate meltables again. These are white chocolate easter eggs filled with a delicious cream jello. The exact flavor of cream jello is something we are going to use for an upcoming shot (we just made these eggs with the excess), so I don't want to spoil the surprise.

Inside out Reese's

Inside out Reese's

Inside out Reese's
Back in the olden days, we attempted using chocolate melts to create jello shot cups with lesser success than what you see here. After seeing the most adorable and beautiful recipe in Victoria Belanger's new book, we decided to try it again. So, it turns out the meltables are a lot easier to work with if they are thinned, Vicky B uses vegetable shortening, we used Paramount Crystals, which are basically the same thing.

This technique was super easy, and the great thing about adding the Paramount Crystals is that it made the peanut butter cups so soft like the texture of a real Reese's- and having the jello contained in a cup means you can make a softer, more pudding-like shot since it doesn't have to hold a mold.

3.14159265 in the Sky

I don't know about you, but I'm a dreamer, not so much a doer.
One of my dreams is to one day be a doer.

Until that day comes I will meander through this world nurturing irrational dreams.
In honor of these dreams, which I think we should all have, we present the Pi in the sky.

An homage to our favorite irrational number and our many irrational dreams.

Pi in the Sky:
The Shot is a Pecan Pi.
A crust of pecan sandies. (very crumbly) crushed and mixed with melted butter
A filling of caramel, crushed pecans, brown sugar, molasses, SCM and Bourbon
Topped with candied pecan crumbles
*Recipe Below*

If you want more digits (and who doesn't want more digits?)

here is Pi to one Million

CONTEST!!
Leave us a comment sharing your Pi in the sky dream.
The best Pi in the sky dream (according to our logic) wins a My Jello Americans Wall Calendar.

I'll give an example:
Today I dreamt that I would have this posted exactly at 3:14 eastern time. Needless to say I was saved by the multitude of time-zones giving me a second and third chance. It's 3:14 somewhere, right?
